What decides a disposal quote is which of the five faults it turns out to be, and whether the unit is worth keeping at all. Two of them, a tripped reset and a jam, are things a household can usually clear without paying anybody.

The faults that should cost nothing

A tripped reset button is a push. A jam is a hex key from underneath. A smell is cleaning the splash guard. If a quote arrives for one of those without anyone having looked, that is worth questioning.

What actually moves the price

Whether the unit has to come off the sink, which turns a ten-minute job into a real one. Whether the fault is the disposal or the drain below it. Whether the mounting assembly is corroded onto the sink. And whether the dishwasher connection has to be redone.

Repair against replacement
